In a statement, Uber - which was the first TVDE platform (individual road transport of passengers in unmarked vehicles) to operate in the country - says it is "a unique measure" in the market that places "Portugal at the forefront of innovation at European level" (outside Europe, the measure already exists in markets such as Brazil and the United States).

"We want all Uber users, on any trip, to feel and know that they are protected by more than 20 security tools, which we continually develop and improve, as well as by specialized security teams based in Portugal," says Francisco Vilaça, general manager of Uber in Portugal, quoted in the note.

The audio recording feature can be activated by users at any time they wish, either before the driver arrives at the pick-up point or during the journey.

Recording will automatically end at the end of the trip or earlier if the user ends it.

All recordings are encrypted, “protected by strict privacy criteria”, and will be automatically deleted from the device after seven days. The recording can never be accessed or shared by the user outside of the app.

According to the platform, only in cases where the user shares the audio recording with Uber, "as part of reporting a security-related issue, will Uber have access to it".

"In these cases, the recording is immediately analyzed by Uber's support teams specialized in security, who will provide the appropriate follow-up", says the platform, adding that it has specialized security teams based in Portugal, in its Center of Excellence, and a security team made up of 150 former law enforcement officers who investigate and act in the resolution of incidents.
